About Us

Rooted in Vihiga, This is Where Our Journey Begins

Our journey began under the canopy of Tiriki Forest, as we walked in the thin footpaths followed by those who seek firewood and herbs in the forest. Here elders lamented that the stories, song and the proverbs of the old golden days were fading alongside the forests that once covered our land. We then realized that the erosion of our cultural memory and the erosion of our soils, as well as the declining state of our biodiversity were the same story. As NASCEC, we exist to rewrite that story.

We are not just an outside CBO. We are farmers, teachers, elders, retirees, youth, etc, from within Vihiga, more so, Tiriki land. We believe that the ancient wisdom embedded in our folktales is not merely history, or mythology, it is a practical, living guidebook for environmental stewardship. It teaches us which native trees like to plant, how to read the rains, and why sacred groves are to be protected. Our mission is to harness this indigenous knowledge through the power of native storytelling to tackle today's challenges of climate change, deforestation, water scarcity, and cultural loss.

We record the stories, we plant the trees mentioned in them, and we teach the next generation to value both. From the edges of Kibiri Forest to the uttermost parts of Vihiga County, we are building a people-driven movement that honors our past to secure our future.
